I want to start this by saying I’m going to sound like a hater, and it’s because I am.

The only reason I finished this book is because I’m prideful in completing the story, usually in hopes that I’m underestimating the ending and the writer will redeem themselves. In this case, she didn’t. I was so happy to get to that last page and be done with it.

Sugar by Mia Ballard reads fast, but not because it’s gripping, because it’s thin and nearly substance-less. These are not memorable characters as they all lack depth.

The storytelling feels juvenile in a way that’s hard to ignore, like it wants to gesture at danger and complexity without actually committing to either. It’s an easy read; I finished it in a few hours, which says more about the simplicity than the momentum. This is a book for fake weird girls.

The protagonist has this cartoonish, wannabe BPD maneater energy, which seemed provocative on the surface, however reveals as hollow underneath. The book seems more interested in aestheticizing instability than interrogating it, which makes the character feel flat instead of frightening or tragic. The cover art and description drew me in but severely under delivered as the concept was more twisted and exciting than it’s execution.

What bothered me most, though, was the ending’s complete disregard for justice. An entire group of people pull a “gotcha” on the main character — not because they genuinely believe she’s sick or dangerous, but because they’re distraught that she killed her childhood rapist, a man they were friends with. LOL? Like … ok. Are we going to breeze over that? The moral framing is lazy and deeply unsettling in the wrong way, asking the reader to swallow a false equivalence that the book never earns.

Also, the “best friend” who reveals that it was all a lie — this is the woman we’re supposed to be gay for? In hindsight, I can’t help but scoff at the attempt at Easter egging the reader about the protagonist having a lesbian crush on her best friend by just repeating a handful of times throughout the book that she is pretty. If she loved her that much, and that same person ultimately became her greatest threat, why didn’t she just cast the love spell on Lilah? Nonsense.

I was also expecting an actual turn of events with the therapist or the love witch. The therapist being a widow who understands the protagonist so intuitively felt like it was leading somewhere — maybe a reveal that she, too, had murdered her husband, which would explain the eerie empathy and parallel psychology. But no. Nothing burger again. Another missed opportunity in a book that keeps gesturing toward complexity and then refusing to follow through.

I understand that the justification for all of this is the reveal that it was a fake setup, but that ending feels as lazy as finishing a creative writing assignment in middle school with “and then they woke up and it was all a dream.”

By the time it reaches its conclusion, the twist feels corny and rushed, as if the author realized there needed to be something at the end and wrapped it up as quickly as possible. Genuinely such a disappointing conclusion.

Overall, Sugar wants to be taboo and unsettling sooo bad, but it plays it safe in a way that feels more fitting for a edgy teen read. And for a story built on transgression, that’s the most disappointing choice of all.

to build some trust via relatability:

i grew up broke

family was on food stamps

heat, water + wifi always out

didn’t go to college

couldn’t drive until i was 26

didn’t have access to an irl job

major family dysfunction

no financial support

was in abusive relationship while broke

If i can do this, so can you. I can tell my story another day but this is for the steps I feel are necessary to make some shit shake pretty rapidly, it’s happened for me overnight a few times. My credentials are making $22k in 60 days, $80k in one month, + my first $100k+ in 2024

STEP ONE

Keep your goals in your awareness daily. You have to commit to your desire, + if you’re an adhd girlie like me, if it leaves your sight, you will forget about it, so you need consistent visual reminders via thought/action coordination (write it down, pray, visually track your monetary progress on paper) EVERY. DAY.

This is the easy part, it takes two seconds + if you cannot manage to do this step, you’re lazy, uncommitted + either don’t believe it, or don’t want it bad enough. If this is triggering, you may still identify too tightly to the version of yourself that subconsciously finds comfort in your misery or stagnancy.

STEP TWO

Get specific on exactly what you will do with the money the second it hits your account + having enough financial literacy to be able to handle it. Real wealthy people are prepared + not deeply moved by large deposits, therefor you need to have a practical plan, not an emotional one based on fear nor excitement. control the money, don’t let it control you.

People that have money check their bank accounts often + keep track of what’s coming in vs what’s going out. you may think saying fuck it + buying a prada bag you cannot afford off depop is “manifesting” more money, but all that reflects is low self concept, as you’re putting the bag on a pedestal to serve the purpose of feeling worthier than you do without it. The only difference is now you’re in debt too.

STEP THREE

Instead of acting as if, act like you know that you already have what you want, + live your present moments through the lens of nostalgia and that there is a fondness for your current circumstances (rather than resentment) so that what you desire is already so familiar to you that it's not shocking to the nervous system.

This is difficult for some people because it requires a genuine perspective shift. We genuinely don’t know what we have until we lose it. Basically have gratitude and appreciation for your "before" as if you are revisiting the past with a fondness only the version of yourself who has evolved beyond it would have.

If you are reading this, you are already in a VERY fortunate spot in life — the world is at your fingertips on this phone. You do not need to live beyond your means, but instead have appreciation for the fact that you have access to the things that you do have access to, as your current lifestyle is someone else’s dream who is less fortunate than you.

STEP FOUR

Take the actionable steps to actually make shit happen, you can't live an entirely different "dream life" in your head and expect it materialize when everything you do in the physical world is of loser behavior. You cannot be a runway model if you're afraid to raise your hand in class. The hot and rich version of you would not be concerned with checking his following. get it together.

Be so magnetic that you pull things into your orbit rather than giving away your energy to everything else externally — anything that influences a low mood has power over you, money included.

Visualize the FEELING of safety, security + gratitude you'd have with this money, not what items you will possess or what other people will think.

Think of how much you can invest into your dreams, your family, and helping others.

STEP FIVE

Remembering that money + abundance comes from all sources, sometimes it's not a dollar amount upfront, but rather an opportunity that can lead to wealth and success, or relationships that align you with a better future, etc. Always be optimistic that today is the day, that this opportunity is your big break, that this moment is the big moment, and seeing magic at every corner.

Tell yourself your success story + see your current circumstances as the transitional point in the journey right before everything changed for you, this will bring a magical spark to what may currently feel dull or stagnant. A fun technique could be recording yourself telling your success story as if you're being interviewed or asked by someone who's inspired by your transformation.

Navigate life like you got it like that, BECAUSE YOU DO, and make decisions based off of that level of confidence, which means saying no to the things that the version of yourself that's feels less worthy would say yes to.

If you wake up tomorrow with $30,000 in your bank account, would you still sleep with that guy that doesn’t like you? Would you still go out drinking with people you don't really like because there's "nothing else to do”? Still keep eating like garbage etc? Please. Control it.

That can be absolutely NO room for desperation as that will only repel all of this — stop fearfully checking for proof or evidence that it's on its way to you. if you combine unwavering faith with inspired action + commit to the vision, it's already in motion. the "change" isn't on it's way to you, you ARE the change!

Your actions need to align with your desires because they are the direct vehicle to get you there. You can think up being a millionaire all day, but millionaires DO things to get and mantain their status, they don't just write it down one million times then rot in bed and doom scroll.

There are people stupider than you, less qualified than you, and genuinely bad people who are doing better than you because they DO something about their situation rather than thinking about it all day! When has that worked for you? Put that pen to paper and that BRAIN to WERK!
